What started as a simple Java application turned into a industry shakeup.

The Human Machine Interface industry had historically been monolithic with a few key players dominating the development of in-car experiences. We were outsiders in that world. When we were solicited for a project proposal for the work, and told that it would be a Java application, we thought it would be fun.

The real problem with the HMI developers was that they had a hold on the expertise, creating a 5 year lag from the start of projects to release.

When we advised to use Javascript and web technologies instead, they received the idea with skepticism. Once they realized there was a huge talent pool for UX design from the web side, the opportunity blew up.

Today web developers and UX designers are able to quickly make changes to HMI designs with very little lag time to production. Much more innovative designs in HMI have surfaced since this time and continue to push in-car experiences to new heights.
